May 30, 2024 – Michigan reported its second human case of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus making this the third human case in the United States amid an active outbreak in dairy cows1.
All three cases—two in Michigan and one in Texas—involved dairy farm workers exposed to infected cows, which indicated probable cow-to-person transmission.
This latest case was also significant as it marked the first U.S. case to present with acute respiratory illness.
Earlier today, the US government stated it was talks with Moderna to create a bird flu vaccine.
Though H5N1 activity was being closely monitored, public health officials said they were monitoring for upticks in emergency room visits or positive H5N1 bird flu tests.
