- The infected individual was a healthy 59 year old male that had no exposure to poultry or other animals.

On 23 May 2024, the Mexico IHR NFP reported to PAHO/WHO a laboratory confirmed human infection with avian influenza A(H5N2).
The affected individual was a 59-year-old man from Mexico State who was also being treated for multiple co-morbidities in the central Mexico City area and had no known exposure to poultry or other animals.
The patient, who was bedridden for 3 days before the bird flu symptoms appeared, developed symptoms of fever, short breath, diarrhea, nausea and general fatigue on April 17 2024.
The patient was hospitalized on April 24 2024 at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases “Ismael Cosio Villegas” (INER) and on that same day died from complications of H5N2 bird flu.
