The Scottish government plans to implement stringent measures to ensure poultry is protected from future avian influenza H5N1 outbreaks.
That said, all bird keepers, irrespective of flock size, must formally register their chicken(s) with the Scottish government by September 1st 2024 or risk jail time.
Previously, only bird keepers with 50 or more poultry were required to register.
Registrations will allow bird keepers to receive timely information on local bird flu outbreaks and any revision in rules.
This will help to manage outbreaks and limit the spread of diseases.
These measures follow the UK’s worst outbreak of avian bird flu H5N1 since October 2021.
