- Fiji Water containing high amounts of manganese and three types of bacteria.
- Martinelli’s Apple Juice containing arsenic.
- Charles Boggini Company’s drinks containing carcinogenic food dyes associated with cancer.
The FDA recalled 28 different beverages – the majority because they included undeclared toxic substances like drugs, bacteria and other chemicals.
Regrettably, a popular pain relief tea made by Kentucky-based The Wiedemann Company contained non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs piroxicam and dexamethasone not disclosed on the label.
Further inspection revealed Martinelli’s apple juice contained toxic levels of inorganic arsenic. This had historically caused neurological and immunological damage at high enough levels.
Fiji water experienced a whopping 1.9m-bottle recall due to hadophiles contamination, a pathogenic bacteria and manganese contamination, a heavy metal. Both have caused neurological illness and acute illness requiring hospital care.
The recalls indicated growing regulatory scrutiny and the issue with undeclared ingredients.
The FDA also recently recalled infant formulas for contamination with bacteria and misleading claims.
Considering everything previously mentioned, this trend underscored the need for stricter quality control and labeling to protect consumer health going forward.
