Japanese public health officials revealed their population was being severely impacted by a flesh eating bacteria. The population was warned to be on alert.
The condition that impacted Japanese people was called streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). It occurred when bacterial infections made their way into the blood stream via wounds, and cracks on skin in hands. Once the bacteria breached the body’s outer defenses, it ravaged inner parts of the body.
Since June 2024, 977 cases of STSS were reported which was much higher than last year.
Signs and symptoms included organ failure, limb pain, and swelling that lead to death within 2 days. There were milder symptoms for luckier people like fatigue, and flu like symptoms. However, people still required treatment in hospital.
Scientists said good hand hygiene and cleaning of open wounds was crucial to preventing this disease.
