A 59-year-old Chinese man had a 25-year history of type 2 diabetes with severe complications and continued to decline medically despite conventional medical treatment1. Plagued by a kidney transplant, and losing half the function of his pancreas, he continued to search for answers.
Interestingly, the affected man found a doctor that offered a groundbreaking islet pancreas cell transplant in July 2021 which completely eliminated the disease and associated symptoms he grappled with for years. All conventional therapies and medications like insulin were stopped.
Yin Hao and his colleagues at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, were the names of the physicians that carried out the pancreas islet cell transplant.
After the story gained international traction, professors from all over the world weighed in. Notably, Timothy Kieffer at University of British Columbia who said, “I think this study represented an important advance in the field of cell therapy for diabetes”.
Doctors stated, the therapy was not ready for prime time. It still needed to be studied and improved.
This case study revealed there may be help on the horizon for the hundred of millions of people in the world suffering from this disease.
