Public health officials from Colorado report a case of bubonic plague today.
There is no information available about the individual including age, or sex. However, public health officials say information of the individual in question may be accessible soon.
Pueblo County’s Department of Health website says “In the Middle Ages, plague was labeled ‘Black Death’ as it swept through Europe killing millions of people”. Plague infection occurs when people and animals come in contact with rodents that carry Yersinia pestis, a pathogenic bacteria.
Symptoms are flu like and include severe pressure in head or headache, fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and death.
The best was to prevent plague is to avoid outdoor rodents, wash hands, keep your pets away from outdoor rodents, and treat pets immediately if they have flea infection.
Doctors treat Plague with antibiotics. However, treatment needs to occur shortly after infection or death could occur.
