Children’s goods sold by Shein, an online shopping powerhouse founded in China, had a 428 times higher concentration of toxic material (phthalates) than legally allowed- that reported by the Korean government in Seoul1.
Shein, headquartered in Singapore, became one of the most popular fashion e-commerce stores worldwide over the past 2 years.
Therefore, Shein’s growth caught the attention of regulators and competitors in the European Union and South Korea.
Shein, Temu and AliExpress’s products were customarily inspected by Seoul government every week.
However, a recent inspection revealed that some Shein items — which included children’s shoes, leather bags and a belt — contained high level of phthalates, which were chemicals extremely toxic to the human body.
Phthalate levels in one pair of shoes were 428 times the legal limit, while three hand bags had exceeded that cap by a factor of 153.
Shein claimed they complied with the government and took the items off the market.
Moreover, Shein acknowledged it prioritized safety and historically collaborated with suppliers as well as third-party agencies that ensured compliance.
So far, ninety-three items underwent testing and 45% contained substances associated with human health hazards.
You can certainly find a deal on Shein. But a question begs to be asked. Is the deal worth your health?
