The Journal of the American Medical Association released a bombshell study1 that revealed pregnant women had nearly 2-times increased odds of their children developing neurobehavioral problems from fluoride exposure. That evidenced by urine tests and check ups on 229 pregnant study subjects over a three year period who resided in Los Angeles California.
So what is fluoride and where is it found? Fluoride is a mineral abundant in the US water supply. People are mainly exposed to fluoride from their shower, drinking tap water, using toothpaste, the dentist and soil.
Fluoride is regulated because it can be toxic. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and states together regulate allowable amounts of this mineral in the water because increased exposure is harmful. For example, fluoride is highly associated with neurotoxicity2 (brain/spinal damage), nephrotoxicity (kidney damage)3, lower IQ4 and gastrointestinal disorders5.
There Are Ways To Reduce Your Exposure To Fluoride Especially When Pregnant:
Replace traditional fluoride toothpaste with a more natural and non-toxic toothpaste like Revitan6.
Stop drinking spring water and start drinking water that is filtered with reverse osmosis (the bottle will indicate reverse osmosis).
Start filtering your own drinking water with filtration systems7,8.
Install shower water filter9.
Ask dentist to use fluoride alternatives.
Do not drink tap water.
Do not boil your food in tap water.
Key Details From Study:
An increase of 0.68 mg/L in specific gravity-adjusted maternal urinary fluoride (MUFSG) was linked to nearly double the odds of children having T scores for total neurobehavioral problems in the borderline clinical or clinical range.
The study used urine samples and neurobehavioral data from the Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES) pregnancy cohort, consisting mostly of Hispanic women in Los Angeles.
Neurobehavioral issues in children were assessed using the Preschool Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), which measures Total Problems, Internalizing Problems, and Externalizing Problems.
The analysis revealed that a 1-IQR increase in MUFSG was associated with a significant rise in T scores for Internalizing Problems and Total Problems.
The results suggest that prenatal fluoride exposure may elevate the risk of neurobehavioral problems in children, indicating a potential need for recommendations to limit fluoride exposure during pregnancy.
