The United States and Europe have started working on producing or obtaining H5N1 bird flu vaccines that can be administered to protect at-risk poultry and dairy workers, veterinarians, and lab technicians, officials said Friday in what influenza experts said might be a critical step toward eventually curtailing a pandemic.
The US announced it was in negotiations with CSL Seqirus to obtain over 4.8 million doses of their H5N1 bird flu vaccine.
Moreover, Europe health officials also worked with CSL to build their reserve of H5N1 bird flu vaccines under the threat of a possible new pandemic.
On the other side of the ocean, Canada consulted with vaccine manufacturer GSK about creating a bird flu vaccine and roll-out over the coming months.
It was important to note, an enormous amount of cattle and poultry were exposed bird flu H5N1 and therefore FDA estimated that nearly 20% of the US milk supply was contained with the virus.
International health officials claimed, human exposure to the virus from poultry and dairy operations, or even consuming certain types of raw milk or dairy products could force the virus to mutate into a strain extremely transmissible or virulent to humans.
